People often associate theory of change and program logic with evaluation at the end of a program or project but it is a whole lot more useful if you use it to design your program and use it right through the life of the program or project. A clear project/program logic:
- Provides the roadmap – proposal writing gets a whole lot easier if you know what you are seeking to achieve and how you plan on doing it!
- Identifies what data (quantitative and qualitative) should/could be captured during the life of the program or project to inform evaluation but also enable us to tell the story of the project.
- Keeps the program/project ‘on track’. Having a logic pinned to the wall in front of your desk is a great way to remind you of what you are seeking to achieve when the chaotic world tries to pull you off course.
- Helps to determine if the project/program is successful through answering your Key Evaluation Questions.
